COP Lecture - Advertising

Today's lecture was on advertising, and the points behind it were as follows.


  • Advertising could be perceived as prostitution.
  • Advertising is a tool used by capitalism to change our established values within society.
  • Advertising changes our perception of what we want and what we need.
  • Advertising has changed society so that people are defined by what they own not how they think.
  • Advertising is often accused of exploring stereotypes and sexism. 
  • Advertising drives the global economy and creativity.
  • Advertising shapes popular culture.
  • Advertising can enlighten, inspire and challenge people.
  • Advertising questions society.
  • Advertising raises social awareness of issues.
